Introduction

This book has been compiled to provide details of tournament winners and runners up of USA steel tip dart tournaments.

Every effort has been used to identify and correctly record winners and runners up of tournaments. In some cases there will be results “missing”. If these can be identified they will be included in a future edition. There maybe errors with names being mispelt and ladies surnames may have changed.

Majority of the tournaments were canceled in 2020 due to the Coronavirus Pandemic.

Where possible, hosting organisation and the year that the tournament was first held will be listed. Other facts about the tournament will be listed if available.

This book provides the reader and dart enthuiast information on other published books and magazines, links to web sites of dart manufacturers, Professional Bodies and Organisations, dart stores, and Country Darts Organisations.

This is not a comprehensive list but begins the work of collating details into one place. Instead of being scattered around the World Wide Web across many sites and publications.

Besides the results and useful links, Chuck Hudson contributed two articles.  One on the founding of the United States Sports Darts Alliance (USSDA) and the second on Sandy Hudson a leading lady professional player from North Carolina.

Many thanks and appreciation to Chuck for contributing these articles and I hope you, the reader, get the same enjoyment of reading those as I did.

A special thanks to the winners of the Winmau Youth National Championships whom gave their permission to allow their photos to be displayed.

I hope you enjoy the book.

Founding of United States Sports Dart Alliance (USSDA) - by founder Chuck Hudson

The United States Sports Dart Alliance ( USSDA ) was created in 2017 to support and promote grass roots darts in America. Having worked for several local and national dart organizations I came to the conclusion that more needed to be done.

In the old days, you looked to the established national organizations to promote darts, but now everything is wide open. With the invention of the internet and social media it is easier than ever for a small group or even one person to make a real difference. For me, there came a point where I felt I could do more if I dedicated myself in a new direction. I believed if I put the work in, then success would follow.

I have met so many quality people in different parts of the country who are dedicated to promoting darts in their own backyard. I wanted an organization to help these people feel connected. America is a very large country and for players, the logistics of traveling for tournaments can be daunting, not to mention expensive. By creating new events we felt like we give players more options to compete.

So I began talking with trusted friends that I knew would give me their honest opinions of our plan, and I received a lot of positive feedback. Next I began to contact people I knew in other areas, I spoke with league officials, national players, local players, potential sponsors and promoters. I listened to what they thought was important and tried to see the good and the bad they were compelled to comment on. I wanted to understand as much as possible, things I knew and things I didn’t know.

Finally, I decided to take the leap of faith and create the USSDA. I formed a group of advisors and we began to talk and plan for the future. I brought in dreamers, managers, sales professionals, writers, video specialists, financial and business people. I wanted everyone to have a voice and I wanted everyone to try to understand my vision. We plotted our slow, managed growth with a focus on dart leagues and the grass roots community. We prioritized and designed phases aimed at steady growth all while keeping our feet under us and not over extending ourselves financially.

The hardest thing I had to do was ask people to invest in the USSDA to develop base capital and help us launch our organization. I hate asking anyone for anything, but I had to swallow my pride a bit during this process. Surprisingly, I didn’t have much convincing to do, people were more than happy to help. We started as a for profit business with 13 investors, the first 13 people we talked too. We felt this was best in the beginning until we knew what we had. We have since fully repaid all of our investors in 2019 and moved to a non profit organization this year.

The USSDA was excited to enter into a partnership with Winmau and in October 2017 we held our first Winmau 501 National Championship in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The Ghost on the Coast tournament agreed to host our event. This is one of, if not the most popular tournament in America. We crowned Sandy Hudson of South Carolina and Joe Efter of Georgia as our first champions and had a solid turnout despite the short notice of the event.

In 2018 we continued to grow our base of league partners and added a 501 Youth National and a Cricket Adult National. We also launched our long format Challenger Series later in the year. Our friends at the Cherry Bomb International tournament in Deerfield Beach, Florida hosted our first Youth Nationals. Their popular tournament was perfectly timed during the summer break from school and they have a highly developed youth program in Florida which made them a perfect choice for the Winmau 501 Youth National Championships. Nicole and Buster Graves, siblings from Tennessee were crowned champions.

Youth players in 2018 at Deerfield Beach, Florida

We decided to move forward with our Cricket Nationals and were able to combine it with the 501 Nationals in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina thus creating the Winmau Championship Weekend. We saw considerable growth from the previous year. The Winmau Cricket Nationals was played on Thursday and the 501 Nationals on Friday. Sandy Hudson from South Carolina and Leonard Gates from Texas won both Winmau National Championships. The increase in attendance let us know we were on the right track. It also showed us that we needed to separate the events to allow for future growth.

Our Challenger Series was created to get American players to play international style long format 501. A Round Robin event, leading to a seeded knockout round like our Nationals. This gave tournaments a chance to expand their events and draw larger crowds. We tested the format at a few small tournaments and laid the ground work for expanding the series the following year.

In 2019 we saw our league partners continue to grow. We kicked off our Challenger Series the first of the year and once again held our Nationals with record turnout across the board. We began to envision international events and plan our next move.

The Winmau Cricket Nationals was moved to Charlotte, North Carolina in April. Charlotte has hosted some big events through the years including the 2009 WDF World Cup. Paula Murphy of Florida and Joe Chaney of Tennessee claimed the Winmau Cricket National Championships.

The Cherry Bomb tournament once again hosted the Winmau 501 Youth Nationals in June. The Deerfield Beach, Florida event had a record turnout and produced some great darts. Rising stars Aaja Jalbert of Maine and Peter Stewart Jr. of North Carolina were crowned as National Champions.

The year closed with a bang as we returned to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina in October for the Winmau 501 National Championship. This event was expanded over 2 days which proved to be a good move, the turnout increased for the third straight year. The champions were Paula Murphy of Florida and Joe Efter of Georgia.

Finalists Joe Efter and Brian Blake, 2019 Winmau 501 National Championships

We had built some strong momentum and were looking for our biggest year ever. The first three weeks on 2020 our league partners had hosted 3 tournaments and 2 Challenger Series. In February our last league tournament was held, then the world was turned upside down. The Covid 19 pandemic dealt a crushing blow to the world, and the world of darts.

Our partner leagues were forced to make hard decisions about league play. Everyone stopped, some came back after a while and others never did return to playing. America is a large country and the state officials mandate what happens in their area so restrictions vary. In some parts of the country they returned to a semi normal routine by summer, while other areas remained locked down.

Leagues were forced to reschedule and eventually cancel their tournaments over virus restrictions. Some tournaments have begun to cancel events in the early months of 2021 and nobody seems to know when this may end. The USSDA canceled all on their 2020 schedule from March through December. As frustrating as this year has been, we at the USSDA have been using the time to plan and transition to our non profit business status.

Where I live, in South Carolina, our leagues have returned and the local Blind Draws have restarted and while everything is not back to normal, I am happy to see our leagues active again. Leagues are and always have been the backbone of the American dart community. We will ride this out with our eyes on the future and the better days ahead. Sandy Hudson: US Ladies Professional Player by Chuck Hudson

Sandy Hudson is one of America’s best and most experienced international players. She is a three time Winmau National Champion, a three time ADO National Champion and the current WDF America’s Cup Ladies Singles Champion. She has represented The United States three times in the America’s Cup, winning two team Gold Medals and competed in the Winmau World Masters eight times.

Sandy returned to competitive darts in 2007 and has won over 140 Tournament Singles titles. She is one of the most talented and popular American players and remains so today after a knee replacement surgery in 2019 where she missed a large part of the tournament calendar during rehabilitation. She was hoping to return to form in 2020 and was off to a solid start in January winning 4 Singles titles and reaching the Finals of both ADO 501 and Cricket National Championships before the COVID 19 virus shut down the world of competitive darts. She had another knee surgery in August 2020 and looks forward to returning to the world of competitive darts when the pandemic eases up.

Sandy at the Charlotte Open, Ladies Singles Champion, Charlotte, NC in 2016.

Sandy is a member of the Greater Greenville Dart Girls which plays in America’s longest running Challenge Cup series, the North Carolina/South Carolina Ladies Challenge Cup which has been played since 1981. She has attracted the interest of some important sponsors which she is so happy to be associated with. They produce top quality products and many of their staff have become like an extended family. Winmau makes her 23 gram “ Storm “ signature Darts distributed by Dutchman Darts. Longtime sponsor L Style Global makes her “ Storm “ Flights and carbon shafts while Magic Wear Apparel produces her custom dart shirts.

Despite all her success she is a grounded person who enjoys helping other players develop their games. She will even help you with your “ out shots “ which has happened many times during her career. It happened in the 2020 ADO National Finals where she helped her opponent understand what was needed to win the game, advise that her opponent used to defeat Sandy. This has caused some tensions with some of her partners through the years but as she’s always says, “ I can tell you what to throw at but you still have to hit it “. It’s not something that other players do very often but it’s just one of the many things that many Sandy unique.

Sandy learned the game in 1989 after graduating from college and returning home to Greenville, SC to start her teaching career. Jobs were scarce back then so she took part time jobs while doing substitute teaching. One of her jobs was at a liquor store where she was recruited and soon began working as a sales representative at a beverage distributor. As it turns out she was a natural and quickly climbed the ranks within the company. Today, thirty years later, she is still with the same company and serves as a Sales Manager in the liquor division. Sandy has teaching in her blood and is well known for developing sales professionals within her company.

She’s really enjoys working with youth players and can often be found in the youth room at tournaments that have these events hanging out and passing along her knowledge. She has played with and helped many children during her career which has endured her to them and their parents. It’s is in this setting that she is most comfortable.

                                                            Sandy with her Youth patrner.

While she is pleasant and helpful that should not be mistaken for being weak. She is very competitive and tenacious when competing. She grew up playing sports in high school and earned a college scholarship to play basketball. Some of the talented male players in our area had to make an adjustment when she showed up and they starting losing to a strong female player, some still do, but overall they have great respect and strongly support her.

Because of Sandy’s demanding work career and the logistical challenges of traveling a country the size of America, she is not able to travel and compete as much as some players which limits her in rankings. But points are not what she chases or is interested in, she just wants to play darts against stiff competition as much as possible.

With her two knee surgeries behind her she understands that the road back will be bumpy and that she may never quite return to the same level of play or success she has enjoyed in the past. But she continues to get better and she loves the game and the people, so she will likely remain in the sport for many years to come. Sandy is one of America’s best players and people, she is a role model for many in the sport.

Paul Lim and Marilyn Popp were the first winners of the Men's and Ladies National Cricket Tournament staged in 1997.

In the Men's Championships only two players have successfully defended the title. Chris White was the first player winning the title in 2004 and 2005. Darin Young achieved this feat in 2008 and 2009. Darin then achieved the same feat again in 2012 and 2013.

The Ladies Championship was dominated equally by Marilyn Popp and Paula Murphy. Between them they were the National Cricket Champions 11 times. Lori Verrier was the first lady to defend the title successfully in 2000 and 2001.
