This book examines the management of migratory flows in the Mediterranean within an international security perspective. The intense migratory flows registered during the year 2015 and the tragedies in the Mediterranean Sea have tested the mechanisms of the Union’s immigration and asylum policies and its ability to respond to humanitarian crises. Moreover, these flows of varying intensities and geographies represent a threat to the internal security of the EU and its member states. By using Spain and Italy as case studies, the author theorizes that the EU, given its inability to adopt and implement a common policy to effectively manage migratory flows on its Southern border, uses a deterrence strategy based on minimum common denominators.

Presents an innovative comparative analysis of two South European countries’ approach to migration management Goes beyond a theoretic approach to migration and border management, to a case study perspective, to assess new lines of approach to those issues Offers a new insight on key critical moments on the EU’s migration management strategy
“Positioned at the intersection between security and international studies, this book examines one of the most challenging issues in contemporary Europe: the protection vs. restriction dilemma at the heart of international migration governance. This excellent and timely analysis advocates adopting minimum standards regarding irregular migration that will help protect the lives (and rights) of migrants.” (Ana López-Sala, Institute of Economics, Geography and Demography, The Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), Spain)
“This is a very timely book on a highly relevant topic which provides a useful analysis and a broad overview of the complex institutional settings of border management in Italy and Spain.” (Cláudia Finotelli, Complutense University of Madrid, Spain)
